What is Gingham?
Gingham is a distinct coloured check pattern on a white background. Traditionally it was cotton but some brands now sell versions derived from cotton blends. Whilst blue was the original colour and by far the most popular it is now found in a wide range of colours.
The Evolution of Gingham
The origin of the word gingham is uncertain and there are at least three theories, none of them proven. When it was first imported into Europe in the 17th century, it was a striped fabric rather than check, but during the 18th century, when the fabric began being produced in Manchester, England, it was produced as a plaid or checked pattern. The striped version faded out in the late Victorian era, whilst the blue check version continued to flourish. Brigite Bardot the famous French Actress got married in a gingham dress, which led to a shortage in France, and in the iconic film The Wizard of Oz, the main character Dorothy wore a gingham dress throughout, pairing the look with a wicker picnic basket. Even James Bond wore a red Gingham shirt on the beach in From Russia With Love!
Today Gingham for men and women is everywhere from shirts, blouses, skirts, dresses as well as clothing for girls, boys and even baby clothes. It is also well known as a tablecloth fabric.
Gingham Tops and Blouses
Gingham shirts for both men and women have been a common sight for a long while. The simplicity of the design means it pairs nicely with a range of accessories and was immediately recognised. A part of many womens wish list, gingham tops are never out of fashion.
