The Origins of Collarless Shirts
Up till the mid 15th century tops were oversized and tended to have necklines that we would today refer to as scooped. Whilst neck ruffs came and went the most significant development came in the 1830s when detachable collars made an appearance. They gradually became permanent collars and that was how most shirts were seen for some time. However there is much dispute over how collarless shirts came back into fashion, with one school of thought claiming it had military origins modern, some that workers not prone to wearing ties cut them off of shirts to a New York housewife who cut off the collar of her husband’s shirt to wash it separately. Whatever the origin, a page had been turned and shirts designed to have no collar entered the market and are still offered today by several recognised brands.
