Our latest blog is dedicated to white shirt with cuff link holes. The perfect choice for work shirts or for those more formal occasions including weddings. Our double cuff shirts available in white and blue options continue to incorporate our signature styling which remains ever popular among our growing international customer base.
Later in this blog we will help inspire you by covering four stylish outfits from our double cuff shirt collection - including white. However first we will give a break-down of the rich history of this special shirt and features to look out for.
Introduction
White cufflink shirts or a white shirt with cufflink holes as they are often described in internet searches have a double cuff that folds back on itself . This is the case with our collection where we also opt for a notched double cuff. However that said you will sometimes find them with a single cuff. The button that normally fastens the cuff in the case of a barrel cuff shirt is absent and instead replaced with another button hole. The shirt is then fastened with links rather than buttons.
In some cases you will find the button alongside the extra button hole that gives extra flexibility in how you choose to fasten the cuff. We have done this for specific customers in the past. The button holes in cuffs are made on special sewing machines that give a great finish and prevent fraying. To make the shirt special these buttonholes can also be made in a coloured thread to make them stand out.
History of Double Cuff shirts
The Double Cuff shirt, or French cuffs as it is often called is rumoured to originate in France when Napoleon III’s aide opted for very high double cuffs that could be turned back over his shirt sleeves to cover up the English style cuffs beneath. Others claim that it was used to wipe noses on! Whatever the origin it actually became more popular when introduced in America, the glamour of being called French may have helped it take off.
By the middle of the 19th century the modern cufflink became popular and shirt cuffs sturdier. It was also practical as starched cuffs were easier to secure using links than buttons.
Signature styling: No ordinary Mens White Double Cuff Shirt
Here at WISC our white double cuff shirt by Paul Brown (also known as French cuffs) is finished with a blue stripe contrast inside the collars and cuffs. It is part of a collection of shirts suitable for cufflinks. We use poplin fabrics for our standard collection but have also manufactured in Oxford Fabric. The shirt has a Windsor type collar to better accommodate a tie and includes removable collar stays.
Like our single button shirts, all our double cuff shirts are finished with a notched cuff so you can see a small amount of the inside of the fabric. The shirt is complete with white buttons for a more formal look, and features a split yoke for comfort around shoulders. The shirt is 100% cotton and combines the best of British Tailoring with a new understanding of what a modern formal shirt should stand for. Our new shirt collection offers both a cleaner and more refined shirt without losing the finer details which continue to set our shirts apart from the competition over the previous collections.
Machine washable and available in sizes small to xxl , this classic formal white shirt is made at our own premises in Suffolk, where we have been making shirts for years. A decade of British excellence.
In addition we have continued our long term partnerships with world renown fabric mills Soktas and Italian shirting mill Tessitura Monti, who not only supply the finest Egyptian Cotton shirting cloths but always offer enough individuality to their designs to make them stand out from the crowd. It means that we can offer our customers a shirt that is both familiar in its DNA but also new in how it is constructed and finished. Why search elsewhere? Why White?
White is by far the most popular shirt colour. In the Victorin era pure white was seen as a symbol of wealth and class. However a more obvious reason is that you can put just about any colour tie with it without a problem. The colour also reflects light well and looks fresh, so styling a white shirt is therefore straightforward. We offer a fantastic selection of ladies and men’s white shirts in a wide range of different shirt styles.

Fabric Types for Double Cuff Shirts
Our Paul Brown collection is made from luxury poplin fabric but Oxford is an alternative. Some brands opt for cheaper synthetic products, but ours are all made from quality Egyptian or Pima Cotton.
Poplin Shirt Fabric
Oxford Shirt Fabric
Oxford fabric was invented in the 19th century in a weaving mill in Scotland. It created a fabric where two yarns were woven into each other to create a new basket weave configuration. The result was a fabric that was durable but breathable. It found its way into many items but clothing made its name. The fabric is used in many of our best selling shirts including our men’s boxer shorts collection.
The shirts and tops made from the fabric were originally named after the country’s elite universities and later the Oxford name prevailed as most popular on sale today.
Four Stylish Double Cuff Shirt Outfits

Outfit 1: White shirt with brown moleskin trousers
Our white double cuff shirt shares many of the signature features you will find on all our ladies and men’s button shirts. This includes contrast fabric inside the collar and cuffs. Pair with brown moleskin trousers for a stylish and warm outfit. If you need a formal coat to wear over the top – try our beige trench coat.
Outfit 2: Blue Shirt with navy moleskin and grey field jacket

Outfit 3: Pin stripe shirt with black chinos
If you want a smart and safe work outfit then this is for you.
Outfit 4: Blue and white stripes double cuff
Paired with our chocolate brown chinos, this is a really cool outfit for work. Pair with a pink tie for more formal moments and if you need a coat – go with our flagship beige men’s trench coat.
Cuff Links
Modern cufflinks are generally secured by folded toggles but an alternative type of cufflink, the silk knot which is two conjoined Turks Head knots, is still quite popular. Adding monograms and logos gave great branding opportunities and expensive versions from luxury fashion houses were created. The scope and variety for design is endless and a quick dive into google will reveal a staggering number on offer.
Wearing Your White Double Cuff Cotton Shirt
A mens shirt with double cuffs is usually recognised as a formal shirt that gives the wearer the opportunity of wearing cufflinks. These shirts call back to a more traditional era of the well dressed gentleman, who would wear a dress shirt every day under their suits whilst working. Almost exclusively worn with ties, they are the epitome of formal style, and are still a common sight in today's offices, particularly in the financial sector, as well as part of a wedding outfit.
Should a Cuff be visible when wearing a jacket or suit?
A debate that still causes dispute is how long should the sleeves be in respect to a jacket? If you have a formal folded back double cuff with links it is generally accepted that around one quarter of an inch of the shirt should be visible below the sleeve of a jacket, be it suit or blazer. However when worn more casually it should be covered. It has to be said that as standards of everyday dress have become more relaxed some of these old style rules are able to be more freely bent now.
Washing your White Double Cuff Shirt
Our white double cuff shirts are a 100% pure cotton product, so add it to a cool machine wash or wash by hand if desired. Set the iron to cotton. Always take extra care to check the label on your shirts for origin and best washing instructions. We do not recommend tumble drying.
