How to shop shirts for summer

Spring has finally sprung and the hot summer days and lazy evening barbecues are finally coming into view. It's time to shuffle your wardrobe around, including grabbing those shoes suitable for the summer days, and pull those summer shirts to the forefront. For this post we have decided to highlight three simple clothing staples that you can view on our site. Firstly, we have chosen to highlight the benefits of the linen shirt.

The humble linen shirt has long been a favoured accessory in hot and humid conditions and it began in early ancient Egypt as a simple rectangular piece of linen cloth sewn up the sides. A long time favourite material, linen is derived from the flax plant creating a strong natural fibre known for its comfort and thermostatic qualities. While the shirt has evolved since then into many different styles, the benefits of a linen shirt still exist today. Much like the properties of wool clothing, linen offers a low thread count therefore less likely to attract dust so very helpful for those with allergies. Coupling this with linen's natural ability to absorb moisture and dry quickly (water wicking) means those hot summer days pair perfectly with a linen shirt.

Matching shirts with quality trousers

Shirts were hailed as the badge of a gentleman, the shirt is perhaps the most integral and versatile part of a man's wardrobe given the variety of shirts on offer today. A good men's outfitter store is able to offer a wide variety to choose from, double cuffed, short sleeve, linen, denim, corduroy, casual or Oxford to name a few. Yet a shirt must be paired with trousers in a style to suit your personality and the occasion they are to be worn. Chinos, jeans, moleskin or corduroy are the most popular trousers outside of a suit, not least because they can be styled with an array of different shoes. Sticking with our theme of origins of materials, moleskin and corduroy both belong to a family of fabrics known as fustian, believed to be named after Fustat in Egypt where the process originated. Contrary to some people's view, moleskin is not actually made from the animal mole but is a densely woven cotton, finished and brushed to give the resemblance and feel of the skin of a mole. Corduroy goes through what was once a time consuming process of cutting long lengths with a thin knife to achieve the effect, before modern machinery was invented. Both trousers offer a smart and casual style in a variety of colours to complement many styles of shirt.

Accessories, including shoes, are not just for ladies at a wedding

The word accessories often has the connotation of only belonging to a ladies wardrobe in the form of jewellery but accessories for men’s outfits can include a variety of good quality leather belts in varying colours, ties both plain, textured or patterned. A regular pocket square can be swapped for a more colourful view, cufflinks and perhaps the most important accessory would be footwear. The shoes a man wears speaks volumes, it is said that a woman can tell alot about a man from the shoes he wears so this is one accessory that should not be overlooked.

Highlighting jackets and coats for the warmer weather

Jackets and coats are not just for winter especially in our ever changing British seasons. Again as with all clothing there are many different styles of coats and jackets available. The timeless classic trench coat which while often coveted as the city men’s coat, can lend itself to almost any occasion and should certainly not be overlooked when the standard colours of navy, black or beige will complement most outfits. The Harrington and Bomber jackets stay simple but with modern tailoring. Field Jackets and gilets offer versatile comfort and warmth.

Jackets that offer warmth in the winter and a light layer on those cooler spring nights come in the form of our popular field jackets. Taking inspiration from the original field jacket utilised in the US Military in 1965, our modern version includes the multi functional four front pockets along with the stylish epaulettes on the shoulders. Worn by some of Hollywood’s finest, our field jackets offer a timeless style and are designed and built to last as long as the style does.

All our jackets are, as with all the clothing you can view on our site, handmade using the finest waxed cotton from British Millerain. We chose the Carlyle Dry Finish waxed fabric which entails two lightweight cotton twill layers secured together with a reliable water repellent finish providing protection from the elements.

The check brushed cotton lining inside provides comfort and warmth complementing the 100% silky viscose lining from the interior sleeves. The integral antique brass YKK zipper, used on most luxury brands due to being robust and dependable, finish these jackets off perfectly.

When creating a distinguished and practical look we not only focus on the integral body of these jackets but take care to ensure all accessories and functional parts of our coats are of the same quality. As such jackets deserve we use a real leather buckle chin strap and finish it off with real buffalo horn buttons. Created from the upper part of a buffalo horn the style of this men’s button provides the deep rich colour that can only be achieved when using natural materials. The buttons provide a strong and durable material ensuring this coat will last as long as its timeless style will.

Quality men’s clothes is an investment worth making

It's simple in this day and age to find many articles about which shoes should be worn with certain trousers, which shirts complement which jackets and which accessories are best matched for particular occasions. After you have your style advice, you then need to find the right outfitter. Style advice is often given based on the occasion to which the outfit is worn, the races, a wedding, a casual dinner or a weekend away. They don’t often include the importance that should be placed on where the clothing should be bought. Many posts will give you a good choice between luxury brands and those lesser known brands. It's important to consider that supporting smaller more local brands is the backbone of any economy and often when a shop stocks smaller local brands you will find the quality can be superior to those that are manufactured en masse. Smaller brands pride themselves on the quality they can offer, for example we hand cut and sew all the products in our shop right here in the UK, in our factory in Suffolk. Of course price is a factor for many but too often nowadays men’s outfitters are overlooked while not investigating what you are really getting for your money.

Any good quality men’s outfitter will tell you that investing in a quality pair of trousers, a view to buying a handful of quality shirts and good footwear will set you up to broaden your choice of accessories including belts and ties. The price of complementing your wardrobe with quality made clothing items is key to the longevity of your wardrobe. Investing in an outfitter that has carefully considered their suppliers means the money you spend is an investment. Clothing is worn on a daily basis and shirts especially can be put through their paces wherever it is worn. For example, men will own at least two good shirts and a good quality shirt should have the ability and strength in its design to be durable and be able to be matched with an array of different styled outfits.

Our website provides you with not only options for luxury British clothing to add to your wardrobe but we are proud to offer quality clothing that is not only designed and handmade in England, but we choose to use only the best supplier partnerships that share our commitment to quality.
