About Linen

The linen shirt has been around for a very long time. The unique properties of the linen fibre make them particularly desirable in hot and humid climates or holidays. The looser weave and water wicking properties combined with strength lend themselves nicely to shirts. Still popular today in both short and long sleeve length, and available in many colours, linen shirts have a very special appeal. Whilst a hot iron and sometimes a bit of starch can maintain a crisp sharp look, linen shirts are more often worn complete with wrinkles for a distinct look confirming its origins. Somehow the unironed look is more than acceptable when the shirt is linen. Our Paul Brown linen shirt collection contains both plain colours and striped fabrics, and is made from a particularly fine linen fabric at a weight that is perfect for men’s shirt production. They are made from a pure linen rather than a linen blend shirt.

Linen Fabric Composition

Linen is a luxury sustainable fabric made from flax fibres. The flax plant has been cultivated in just about every country in the world and has been used to make fibre for over 6,000 years. To extract the fibres, the plants are either cut or pulled by hand from the ground . The seeds are then removed through a process called winnowing or ripping, followed by retting which removes the plant stock from the fibres. Once the fibres are separated to collect the longest pieces, which can be up to 20 centimetres long, they are then spun into yarn and then woven into fabric. The result is a textile two to three times stronger than cotton with different properties.

Uses of Linen

LInen Fabric was once considered so precious that it was used for wrapping the bodies of mummies in Egypt. Linen is also naturally anti-bacterial, which made it a popular choice for bandages for centuries. It even finds its way into dollar bills! The fabric also readily absorbs dyes making it very useful for a range of garments such as shirts, shorts, suits and jackets, as well as home furnishings.

The Properties of Linen

Linen is between two and three times stronger than cotton, and the hollow fibres in combination with great wicking properties and a looser weave makes it ideal to use in the manufacture of cool but durable shirts to wear when the weather is hot. It has natural anti bacterial properties and takes well to the dying process so is found in a wide range of colours. It is a sustainable natural fabric that is hypoallergenic and does not pill as badly as cotton. Although the price is generally higher than cotton, its unique properties mean that it is still in great demand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is Linen the same as Cotton?

A: Linen is not the same as cotton. Linen is a sustainable fabric made from flax fibres. Once the fibres are separated to collect the longest pieces, they are spun into yarn and eventually woven into fabric.

Q: Does Linen Shrink?

A: Both Linen and cotton can shrink so it is advisable to take care when washing your linen shirt and not to tumble dry.

Q: Is Linen easy to Iron?

A: Linen is not easy to iron but its wrinkled appearance is one of its charms. If you wish to retain a new look crispness for your linen shirt then ironing on high heat with a touch of spray starch is your best option.

Q: Is Linen Biodegradable?

A: Like Cotton, Linen is biodegradable, making products from it sustainable. At WISC we are committed to moving towards sustainability, with most of our garments being produced from cotton or linen rather than man made fibres.

Q: Is Linen Hypoallergenic?

A: Both cotton and linen are hypoallergenic; however, linen is considered by many as superior for people with allergies as the loose weave is less likely to trap dust and particles.

Q: Is Linen as durable as Cotton?

A: Cotton has a little more stretch and flexibility than linen but is not as durable. Finer cotton, like Egyptian cotton, is made from long-staple cotton fibres, which makes this cotton softer and more durable than standard cotton, but still not as durable as linen. Linen lasts longer because the cellulose fibres in linen yarn are slightly longer and wrapped tighter than those in cotton yarn which increases its strength. Your linen shirt will be twice as strong as its cotton counterparts.

Q: Does linen absorb Moisture?

A: Whilst Cotton is more absorbent, Linen does absorb a lot of water and can hold up to 20% of its own weight. The water strengthens the fabric. Linen also has natural water-wicking qualities, which means it draws water, or sweat, or sweat out of the skin and dries quickly. This property makes wearing a linen shirt ideal in warmer weather.

Q: Does linen pill as badly as cotton?

A: Cotton pills more than linen as cotton fibres are weaker. Both cotton and linen wrinkle easily, as they are made from natural fibres. Linen is a little stiffer and stronger.

Q: How should I wash my Linen Shirt?

A: Your linen shirt will soften as you wear it over time and it can be washed in the washing machine. It should be washed in cool or cold water and never tumble dried. If you want the fabric to remain more crisp dry cleaning is your best option.

Q: Are linen shirts cool to wear?

A: Yes. The wicking properties and hollow nature of the fibres coupled with a generally looser weave make linen shirts very cool to wear. They are a great summer or holiday shirt with the ultimate casual look.

Q: What should I wear with a linen shirt?

A: Linen shirts are generally worn with chinos or chino shorts, often with the sleeves rolled up in warmer weather.
