Horse Race Attire Mens
Our new blog is dedicated to horse race attire for men. As a Suffolk company only a few miles away from
Newmarket race course, we understand the essential attire for men to look your very best for a day at the races. We have identified four key items for your consideration:
1. Trench Coat
2. Tailored Shirts
3. Trousers
4. Waistcoat
Trench Coat
When it comes to selecting a coat for the races, the trench coat should always be your first choice. The go to coat worn by race goers of all ages, this iconic coat is not only stylish and versatile but can withstand the ever changing British weather, and is often worn over a suit.
Our trench coats are the very best of British tailoring and manufacturing and are both stylish and practical. We use an 8 oz dry finish water resistant twill cloth from legendary British waterproofing mill: British Millerain who have been proofing fabrics for over a century. The cloth is made by laminating two 4 oz twill cloths together which creates a thin pocket of air between the two cloths that trap heat – a similar process to double glazing and will keep you extra warm. As the cloth is 100% cotton it will also allow your skin to perspire compared to many brands that opt for a polyester composition.
We spare no expense in using only the finest materials to make our ladies and men’s trench coats. This includes using real leather buckles and polished buffalo horn buttons. In addition we use a 100% cotton luxury shirting fabric for the interior lining and for under the collar.
Our trench coats include all the traditional features one would identify with this heritage coat. Key features include sleeve straps, a rear wind breaker, gun flap and belt with D - rings.
Each coat is hand cut and made to order at our Suffolk factory. Current colours include beige, navy and black.
Tailored Shirts as part of your Outfit for men
When it comes to the races every man should always wear a long sleeve tailored shirt. No T-shirts or polos. It should be a long sleeve button shirt. That said there are three options available to men:
1. Double Cuff Shirt – perfect for those intending to wear a tie, our double cuff shirts available in white, blue and pinstripe are all finished with a Windsor cut collar which is perfectly suited for a tie.
2. Button Down Collar Shirt – the button down collar shirt is the perfect balance between smart and casual and is recommended for those who plan not to wear a tie with their outfit. Offered in classic button down colours including blue, white, pink and stripes.
3. Signature shirts – in addition to the above we also offer our signature shirts finished with contrasting buttons, buttonholes and interior collar and cuffs. Again these are for those who plan not to wear a tie and want something more bold and exciting.
We have been manufacturing men’s shirts for over a decade. Our shirts are fitted and are a perfect medium between slim fit and a classic regular fit. Sizes range from small to XXXL and recently we added a S/M version to our range. The fabrics are a combination of 100% cotton and linen and are sourced from the finest European shirting mills. The signature shirts include British made buttons from Courtney and Co.
Trousers to wear at the horse race venue
We offer a fantastic selection of trousers for all months of the year from our moleskin and corduroy trousers that will keep you extra warm during winter to our twill chinos for the rest of the year. All our trousers include classic features like front slanted pockets and rear double welt pockets with pocket flaps. They are very versatile and can be dressed up or down.
Our trouser cloths are either 100% cotton or 97% cotton with 3% elastane. Both fabrics have stretch which makes them extremely comfortable to wear. The fabrics come from Yorkshire mill Brisbane Moss. We also use the finest shirting fabric for the interior pockets along with buffalo horn buttons. The quality of fabrics and finish is second to none.
Our trouser collection uses medium weight fabrics which are a good all year round option. If you are seeking a lighter or heavier weight cloth we can offer this for a small surcharge. Please contact us to find out more information.
Fit is crucial for style and comfort
The best part of our trouser collection which differentiates us from other trousers brands is our create your own trousers online. This service is the online equivalent to made to measure. We offer customers an unparalleled selection of waist and inside leg measurements including odd sizes and three leg builds; slim, medium and classic. In each colour we offer over 200 unique combinations. We strongly recommend you measure yourself or a pair of trousers before buying. Many brands are actively involved in vanity sizing where the actual waist size is bigger than the size label suggests.Waistcoat for your day out
If you need to layer up between your tailored shirt and trench coat you have two options; a blazer or waistcoat. The waistcoat is an underused option as it always looks really smart, and if it does get warm you will be far more comfortable than wearing a blazer. Our men’s waistcoat collection includes a selection of tweed collared and non collared options depending upon personal preferences and the level of formality you desire. Complete the ensemble with a printed handkerchief. If you are planning on wearing a tie then match the handkerchief to the tie.
Dress Code for the Races
Always check the dress code for your meeting as certain courses have their own codes and restrict entry to certain parts of the course according to attire
Conclusion
There are three key items of clothing for the perfect men’s horse racing attire. The iconic trench coat, the tailored shirt and trousers all make for a great outfit. If you need that extra layer then go with a waistcoat and show everyone you understand true style. In terms of colour options, this is down to personal preference. If uncertain we would recommend our beige trench coat coupled with dark trousers as they contrast well against each other. For the shirts you have multiple options from our most formal double cuff shirts to button down and signature styles. If you are uncertain then you can’t go wrong with our blue or white double cuff or button down shirts. Of course always remember to check if there is an official dress code.
