Corozo Buttons | Sustainable buttons for our London Shirt Collection

Corozo Buttons

Corozo buttons are made from a nut from the Tagua tree. They are durable, smooth and take colour and laser decoration well. They have an impressive, beautiful grain and resist fading and scratching. They are available in a range of traditional sizes and an extensive array of colours.

Corozo

Corozo is a natural jelly like substance often referred to as Vegetal Ivory that is harvested from the nuts of the Tagua Palm Tree, phytelephas macrocarpas, after they have fallen from to the ground. If they are harvested before falling the corozo is not suitable for button making. No trees have to be cut down and after 15 years of maturing a Tagua tree can produce up to 25 kilograms of nuts, for over a hundred years. Each Tagua tree produces up to 15 fruit clusters which are about a foot across in size, known as mocacha. Each mocacha contains 30 seeds which are called Corozo or Tagua nuts. The trees grow in South America, most commonly in Peru, Columbia, Ecuador and Panama, but they are also found in areas of Portugal. Locals collect the fruit of the correct size from the forest floor all year round. Corozo has a beautiful grain pattern, is impressively durable and resists scratching.

Corozo Button Manufacture

After drying the natural corozo becomes hard and can be processed into Corozo blanks or finished into a corozo button. It can be machined and polished into a wonderful attractive finish.

Sewing

Although a natural material, corozo buttons are durable and can be sewn on industrial button sewing machinery that is commonplace in the clothing manufacturing industry.

Other Products

Corozo is also traditionally made into other products such as ornamental figurines, chess pieces and jewellery.

Sustainable and Eco Friendly

Corozo is a natural product that fits well with sustainability issues currently in the fore in the fashion industry. When plastics made their way into the fashion industry, Corozo and other natural materials were forgotten. Now the obvious environmental implications of using plastic is clear, it has seen a revival. For a long while the Fashion Industry has given scant regard to the huge impact it has on the environment, but now the tide is turning. Natural products which were onced shunned for synthetic are now highly regarded. Here at Paul Brown, our new London collection of shirts and our linen shirts have moved away from the traditional plastic button. In its place we now use Corozo buttons in a range of colours from Courtney and Co button makers. By combining these buttons with cotton fabrics and manufacturing here in the UK, we produce classic quality garments that are far more sustainable and made to last.

Our Shirts

We already use four hole corozo buttons in our London shirt collection and on our Linen Shirts. Going forward it will be on all new designs. The colour and grain of a corozo button enhances our luxury cotton fabrics. Shown below is our Knightsbidge shirt and our Dunwich shirt from the London Collection and the St Lucia White Linen Shirt. As you can see the buttons form an integral part of the design appeal.
