Best Harrington Jacket Brand
This new blog is dedicated to our luxury Harrington jackets that are designed, cut and made at our Suffolk factory in England.
This blog will look at the history of this iconic coat along with key features to look for when making your next purchase.
History of the Harrington Jacket
The Classic Harrington jacket, like the trench coat and later field jacket has simply become an icon; a wardrobe staple for men across the world. Smart but casual it can easily fit any occasion and has been worn by leading Hollywood actors, sports stars and of course no other than famous secret agent James Bond. The history of the jacket has its roots in Manchester which during the 19th century was the centre of the world’s entire cotton production. Many clothing manufacturers arose during this time including Baracuta who produced rain coats for brands including Burberry and Aquascutum. Over time the company started developing their own brand and in 1937 they launched a short waterproof zipper jacket called the G9. The G stood for golf as it offered sufficient movement to strike the ball without being too restrictive. In 1950 they jacket was exported to the States and was worn by pro golfers, actors and president Regan.
During the 60’s the character Rodney Harrington from the television series Peyton Place was so frequently seen wearing the jackets that the style of jacket came to be named after him.
While there are many derivatives of this great jacket today, we believe our Harrington jacket brand is up there with the very best. Key features include:

Harrington Jacket Style: A Thoughtful Design and Fit
When designing a traditional Harrington jacket, it is essential you keep to the base DNA of the jacket. If you make too many changes you no longer have a Harrington Jacket. We were fully aware of this and have seen too many brands lose the identity of the jacket during the preliminary design phase.
We started with identifying the critical parts of the coat. This included using a waterproof cotton outer shell along with a check cotton lining. The jacket would have two front slanted pockets, adjustable cuffs and a classic one part collar.
Like the original jacket we ensured there was sufficient movement around the shoulders so it is very comfortable to wear and easy to take on and off. That said, we did ensure that there is still a nice shape and silhouette to the jacket so it looks stylish and in keeping with current fashion trends. Sizes range from medium to XX large.
Confident that we had the basis of the jacket sorted, we then looked to adding our own distinct styling so it fits nicely into our current menswear collection. This collection not only includes men’s jackets, but also tailored shirts, trousers and boxer shorts among other things. Design details we are particularly proud of include contrast corduroy cloth for the interior collar and cuffs. This makes the jacket perfect for a cold day, adding extra warmth round your neck and wrists.
Last but not least we also added antique copper press studs for the collar and cuffs which contrast nicely against the three colour options available: black, grey and stone.
Quality materials
If you are seeking the best Harrington jacket then it always begins with quality materials. We spare no expense in sourcing only the very best fabrics. This starts with the outer shell cloth which is supplied by famous waterproofing mill British Millerain. We use an 8 oz 100% cotton water resistant cloth that is not only practical in keeping you dry and warm, but also has a wonderful feel and finish. It is a truly luxurious cloth which we also use for our trench coats and field jackets.
For our grey and stone Harrington jackets, the interior lining is split into two parts. The main body lining is a traditional check cotton sourced from Europe’s finest shirting mills. For the sleeves we use 100% viscose supplied through the Lining company which makes it effortless in terms of putting on and taking off the jacket. For our black Harrington jacket lining we have gone for a full burgundy viscose, adding a little more formality to the jacket.
As mentioned earlier we chose a corduroy cloth for the inside collar and cuffs. This is supplied by the famous Yorkshire mill Brisbane Moss. The front zipper comes from YKK and complements the antique copper press studs.
Made in England
Like all our clothing, our Harrington jacket is hand cut and made to order at our Suffolk factory in England. When it comes to quality production, it is often the steps that are not always visible on the final jacket that are the most important in determining the life of the garment. This is very true for our men’s Harrington jackets and other coats. They all include a number of seams that are sewn two or three times rather than just once. This adds to the overall production time and costs us more money, but ensures that we are 100% confident that what each jacket we sell will last the customer a lifetime.
Styling our Harrington jacket
As is common among our blogs, we offer customers potential styling options for our Harrington jackets. In this case we style our black, stone and grey coats.
1. Grey Harrington Jacket
For those seeking the perfect summer outfit then look no further than our grey Harrington jacket with striped linen shirt and French navy chinos. This outfit is a stylish smart casual option for work wear or an evening out. Complete with cream trainers or a pair of brogues depending upon the formality. Note: Always seek French navy chinos or trousers. They really do add to your outfit while darker shades can sometimes look like a faded black. With regards to trouser fit, we offer a first class selection of men’s chinos and trousers as part of create your own trousers. This enables men to choose from over 200 unique combinations per colour which includes three leg builds and a wide range of waist and inside leg measurements.
2. Stone Harrington Jacket
The perfect all round jacket for either work, the weekend or those summer holidays. We have styled the stone with our purple stripe shirt and navy moleskin trousers. Alternatively try our light blue linen shirt and white chino shorts.
3. Black Harrington Jacket
Without doubt the most formal option of the three jackets. Style our black Harrington with a blue shirt, grey chinos and suede belt. Dress up for work or a night out.
Looking after your Harrington Jacket
As the jacket shell includes a water resistant finish we recommend cleaning any dirt off with cold water and a sponge. Beware of dry cleaning as the chemicals will likely remove the water resistant finish and therefore the jacket may need to be re-proofed.
Conclusion: The best harrington jackets for the money
While there are many brands that claim to be the best Harrington jacket brand, we are quietly confident that our careful styling, fabric selection and first class production process offers a Harrington jacket of superior quality. Equal to none. Further create an entire outfit by adding our trousers and tailored shirts in the mix.
Sustainability and Size
I cannot leave this blog without mentioning sustainability. It means many different things to many different people. It is well known that the fast fashion industry does enormous harm to the environment, particularly oil based fabrics and single use garments. You should consider this fact every time you shop for clothing. Here at WISC we make classic garments that are built to last from natural fabrics to help minimise our impact. They are designed to be worn again and again without losing their shape or appearance. Multiple use also means that they become value for money. We also make most of our products to order so that unwanted stock is never a feature. Size is also a factor in sustainability. If clothes fit well they will be used a lot and the issue of returns for ill fitting garments becomes redundant. We stress this on our site and in addition to an extensive detailed size guide, we offer a special ‘design your own trouser’ section for this very reason. If you generally purchase off the peg chinos for example and try to make them fit, why not visit our website with your measurements and we will make you a pair. Going forward we continue to look at ways of improving our sustainability credentials further. You should also always consider recycling or donating any clothes you really don't want or need.
