With beach wedding attire for men becoming an increasingly popular online search, we decided it was time to write a blog to help both brides and grooms prepare for their special day. A beach wedding is by nature a very different occasion to a traditional wedding and as a result the appropriate attire requires special attention. It is without question a more laid back event and most likely to be held on a hot summer day. This creates a unique set of challenges; how does one dress for the heat while also creating an outfit that still adheres to such an important occasion. You can’t simply turn up in cargo shorts and a shirt. Special thought is certainly required.

Rule 1: Trousers or Shorts?

This is without doubt the question that comes up the most with regards to beach wedding attire. Some men have genuine concerns that despite the heat, shorts are a no go. However the real question comes down to the type of shorts to be worn. Khaki shorts are a non starter, but well made tailored chino shorts can look very stylish. Our chino shorts include traditional British tailoring such as front slanted pockets and rear pocket flaps for that extra level of formality. Rule 2: What Type of Shirt Should I Wear?
While it may be a beach wedding, to be clear you can’t turn up in a polo shirt. This is not just a rule for the groom , but also the best man, ushers and wedding guests. It must be a tailored shirt. Naturally one may consider a short sleeve shirt, but we personally think this is too causal for such an important occasion. We recommend a tailored long sleeve shirt.

Rule 3: Think of the whole day, not just the ceremony
Don’t fall into the trap with regards to dividing the wedding into specific sections. Consider the whole wedding day and how it will evolve. This deeper understanding will help guide you in terms of what outfit you need to wear.
For example during the service you will be at your most formal. Shirt buttons and cuffs done up. However after the service as you move to the reception you will gradually become more relaxed; especially if it is a hot day. As a result you need to consider a shirt that offers an extra dimension to your outfit.

Rule 4: What colour shirt should I wear to a beach wedding?

The obvious answer is white as it remains very versatile and will easily complement a wide selection of potential outfits. Our men’s white linen shirt is a good example which is versatile but also stylish. Rule 5: Do I have to wear a suit to a beach wedding?
The short answer is no. Suits are not required for a wedding outfit. If you are a fan of the jacket or blazer, then by all means where one, but you don’t need matching jacket and pants. It is completely over the top.
Rule 6: The Waistcoat

Of all the clothing options for your wedding day, never under estimate the importance of the waistcoat. The right waistcoat will work well with tailored chino shorts and a shirt and will add a level of formality to the occasion that cannot be matched. Further unlike the jacket or blazer, you can wear a waistcoat in warmer weather without overheating. It is your essential go to item and must be included. We recommend a light weight tweed that will provide wonderful texture to your outfit. Our favourite options are our light blue and sand tweed waistcoats. Note that our sand waistcoat includes a traditional collar lapel which adds an extra level of formality to your outfit. Which one you choose is purely your choice as both are equally stlylish.
Rule 7: What trousers should I wear to beach wedding?
If chino shorts are off the menu, then we recommend traditional cotton twill chinos for your wedding. Stay away from wool as it is too hot and while linen trousers are cool, they are a nightmare to iron. You don’t want creased linen trousers in all your wedding photos! Cotton twill chinos are a good all round option. Still formal but casual enough that you don’t look over dressed on the beach. Rule 8: Fit is really important
Always properly measure yourself before buying as there is nothing worse than an outfit that doesn’t fit. With regards to chinos, we offer create your own chinos online where you can select from a wide choice of waist and inside leg measurements including three leg builds; slim, medium and classic.
With regards to men's chino and men's chino shorts we strongly recommend you measure yourself or a pair of trousers you currently own. Do not assume the size label inside the trousers is correct as many brands are actively involved in vanity sizing where the label inside is smaller than the actual waist size.
Rule 9: Do I need to wear a tie?
Remember It is beach wedding on a hot summer’s day. No you don’t need to wear a tie. In fact if you buy one of our shirts with a contrast fabric inside the collar, this will easily make up for the lack of tie. Also if you are wearing a waistcoat then consider a handkerchief to add some colour to the outfit?.
Rule 10: What about ushers and wedding guest?
Yes and no .While the wedding ushers and wedding guest don’t have to wear the exact same outfit as the groom (you want to stand out), in the same breath you don’t want them to look completely different. Consider the same trousers and shirt, but a different waistcoat for example.
